PRESS RELEASE MARCH 2008

Glendene Cycling Club in association with its sponsors Specialized, Essex Autos Group, Bio-Racer, Maxim, Oce’ and Bike-Trax, are proud to announce the launch of its 2008 Junior and Youth Development programme and Senior team.

The teams aim to build on the success of the last 3 years, which have provided World, European and National Champions, and continue to progress riders into the British Cycling Olympic Development Programme (ODP) and Academy programmes as well as the Beveren 2000 U23 development program based in Belgium, which is currently one of the leading feeder teams for the Quickstep professional racing team.

Glendene are also proud to have a strong working relationship with Brentwood Borough Council and Essex County Council, who see Glendene as an excellent opportunity for local and regional sporting development.

2008 Junior Development Team

This year the team will be managed by former professional Bob Downs and will have the additional assistance of multiple time trial champion Steve China to further develop the rider’s time trialing capabilities.

The 2008 Junior Development program comprises of six riders. These are Joe Perrett, 2007 GHS National 10 mile Time Trial champion, David Nichols, 5th overall in the National Trophy Junior Cyclo-Cross 2007/08 Series, David Bagdan, who is the 2007 Hungarian National Junior Road Race Champion, Tom Yateman, current CTT National Junior Time Trial Series Champion, and also Nathan Edmondson and Joel Davison who both competed in the National Junior Road Race Series last year.

The junior team will be facing an ambitious racing schedule with key objectives being all national events on the road and time trial. We will work with British Cycling and their endeavours on the track and road. For the forthcoming season, the team will also be challenging for international honours in Belgium, arguably the hardest junior racing, that will not only enable them to improve their skills and experience but also giving them the opportunity to ride at the highest level to reach their full potential.

2008 Youth Team

Through the recently established link with Lee Valley Youth Cycling Club, Glendene hopes to encourage and develop young, talented riders and give them an opportunity to ride as part of a team. The new team consists of Oliver Rossi, 1st under 14 in the 2007 GHS National 10 mile Time Trial championship and 2nd in the Assen International Jeugdtour in the Netherlands. Jim Lewis 2nd under 14 in the 2007 GHS National 10 mile Time Trial championship and 6th in the Assen International Jeugdtour. The team also includes Josh Edmondson, who competed in the National Youth Circuit Series last year and looks to be a great prospect this season.

2008 Senior Team

The 2008 objectives for the senior team are to be competitive in British Cycling’s Premier Calendar Series and also the Eastern Road Race League. The senior team retains the services of Ben Thompson, Steven Griffiths, and Shaun Hurrell, who moves up from the junior ranks and hopes to continue his mountain bike success as well as helping the rest of the team on the road. The team also sees the return of Matt Talbot, who was 2nd in the 2007 Archer Grand Prix, and new to the team this year is South African rider Andre Joubert.
