29/08 - Junior Tour of Wales
The Glendene Juniors did a remarkable ride in this year's edition of the Junior Tour of Wales not only in terms of individual performances but also as a Team. This race is penultimate round of the National Junior RR Series and contained international competitors.
Alex Dowsett started well in the 8 km hilly time trial placing 2nd only 20 seconds behind the Norwegian winner. Alex also beat the recently crowned World Pursuit Champion, Andrew Tennant.
Stage 2, a 65 mile road stage, saw Ben Swift breaking away and moving into overall lead. Alex moved down to 7th overall.
Stage 3 was a 45 mile road stage in which Alex and Russell finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. The stage was won by that elusive Norwegian.
Stage 4 was the Bryn Bach Park Crit and things didn't go well for Alex after a crash causing him to buckle his wheel. Nevertheless he finished but slipped down the overall standings.
Stage 5 was the final 70 mile road stage which passed over the Brecon Beacons and finished on the summit of Tumble Mountain. Despite Alex's previous days difficulties he was resilient and With 50 miles to go both Alex and Russell got in a small break and obtained a lead of 3 minutes on the bunch. The overall contenders were helpless against the break. On the final ascent Alex was victorious closely followed by Russell who survived the weekend despite suffering a stomach bug.
After calculations were made it was Alex who took the Overall victory and King of the Mountains. Russell did enough to get 6th place overall. Both Kristian Downs and Lewis Atkins put in good performances to give the Glendene overall victory in the team classification as well. What a performance!

After a good break from the ERRL racing Edward Whitehorn took to the Essex roads. The short 108km race with long neutralised section took place on the Debden/Thaxted circuit. The Glendene were missing Alex and Russell as they were track training; perhaps they were the lucky ones.
On lap 2 Edward attacked up the climb to Debden only to find himself on his own. With only one rider in visible pursuit he decided to go it alone for the time being. 5 miles later and he was joined by 5 other riders which was a terrible shame as Ed hoped they might just leave him there as was quite good training.
With 2 laps to go a group of 10 riders got away and built up a 30 second lead. Unfortunately there were no Glendene riders in the break despite Adrian's best efforts. Ed set about forcing himself from the bunch after feeling a bit guilty that he perhaps didn't give the race enough respect. Ed eventually got rid of the bunch after about 4 consecutive attacks. Nick Hastler (Essex Roads) was the only rider who cared to join him in his pursuit. The leaders gap did fall for the early part of their chase but the gap soon opened up as Ed and Nick tired.
At the finish it was Douglas Bradshaw (Cambridge CC/API?) who won on his own just ahead of the main break. Ed finished in 12th place. Adrian was 3rd in the Bunch sprint to take 15th place and Mark Porter made his comeback to road racing with a 19th place.
