Zwevegem-Kappaert Race Belgium 3rd May 2008

This was the first race in a hectic schedule of 3 races in Belgium and the UK over the Bank holiday weekend. It was a distance of 84km and consisted of ten 8.4 km circuits.

3rd Nathan Edmonson
4th Joe Perrett
7th David Nicholls
13th Joel Davison
26th David Bagdan

Torhout Race Belgium 4th May 2008

This was the race where officiousness overcame logic and common sense. Even though the lads raced the previous day, the lack of an additional BC letter prevented Nathan, Joel and Dave Nicholls from racing. It was left to the rest of the team to rise above the debacle and keep the Glendene 'flag' flying. This time it was more like an 81 km criterium with eighteen 4.5 km circuits.

3rd Joe Perrett
22nd David Bagdan

Ixworth Criterium Races 5th May 2008

It was truly a glorious day for this annual event in the very picturesque Suffolk village of Ixworth. A good crowd was already gathering around the course for the early events. Of major Glendene interest was the Masters race where Bob Downs was going to metamorphose from team manager to competitor. The racing chrysalis had been dormant for 19 years would a 'beautiful' butterfly emerge? The Junior team lads were anticipating the event eagerly to see how Bob could 'keep at the front' and give a bit of stick if he didn’t! Suffice it to say the inaugural outing was a master class of positioning, cornering and keeping up with the breaks. The only disappointment was the fact that Bob just missed a podium place at the finish. Colin Mannakee was also splendidly representing the Glendene and was rueful of his previous day’s efforts which affected his eventual position in this race. However Mrs Mannakee was glad of the pleasant outing and the promise of a lovely pub lunch for a change - who says that good things don’t come to those that wait - or even spectate!

The next race of Glendene interest was that of the Youth A and B categories. The lone representative was Josh Edmondson fresh from his exploits on the Isle of Man. Having clocked the 'out of sight out of mind' lone break scenario from the Masters race, Josh made a decisive move about half way through the race and broke the hearts of local riders by going solo and staying away quite comfortably for a very imperious win.

Josh Edmondson wins.
Josh Edmondson wins.

Next was the Junior race. Lining up was the full complement of the Glendene Biketrax Junior team. Early on there were a few moves by riders to break away but they were watched closely and reined in. Nathan Edmondson emulating his brother then chose to make a break and the rest of the team controlled the chase by swamping the front of the bunch and slowing the chase. After a couple of circuits of riding tempo, David Nicholls accelerated out of the bunch and rode hard to catch Nathan who had an eight second lead. By now the chasing bunch had split with Joel Davison, David Bagdan and Joe Perrett watching previous Ixworth Crit’ winner Dominic Schills and a few others in the first group and Tom Yeatman not far behind at the head of the second group.

As the race progressed, Nathan and David N worked well together to keep away. The only thing to wonder about was - who out of the two would be the eventual winner?
As expected, Dominic was eager to bridge the gap to get to them but was thwarted by Joel, David B and Joe who shadowed and matched his every move. Meanwhile there were prime prizes for the bunch and Tom was doing a sterling (quite literally!) job every time the bell went, by getting to the line first.
With four laps to go Dave B and Joe were winding up the pace but around the back of the course Dave B was unfortunate to slip on some loose gravel and crashed. However he was up quickly and got back on Joel’s wheel. At the bell, the home straight crowd of spectators were anticipating a hotly contested sprint once Dave N and Nathan re-emerged from the tight final corner. So it was, with them neck and neck at the final turn with Dave just edging it at the line from Nathan. (This victory certainly helped towards overcoming the previous days’ racing disappointment for Dave and Nathan).
So Glendene had two podium places - could they make it a third? The answer was yes. Joe had pulled comfortably away ahead of Dominic. Joel got up well to come in fifth and Dave B came in a brave seventh. Then there was the bunch gallop for the line led again by Tom.
To summarise, it was a splendid display of successful team riding from the lads, with much to keep Bob Downs happy.

Two more Glendene riders figured in the regional 3/4 category race and put on a good display with Mark Barningham coming in eighth and his brother Tom well placed too.
